| Description/Remarks | In the travelling Memorial Retrospective Exhibition (1977-1979) Hawkin's larger symbolic murals had to be excluded from the tour owing to logistics. In the catalogue foreword, Ron Radford wrote, "This is especially regretful as he regarded them as his major statements. However his powerful and dramatic mural "Man", 1950, is illustrated in colour above. It is these very serious and meaningful subject pictures which distinguish his subject matter from the more conventional motifs used by his Australian contemporaries." Note: "Composition study for 'Man'" is in the AGNSW Collection. |
