Portrait of seated grey-haired male wearing wire-rimmed spectacles, brown suit, white shirt and russet-coloured tie beneath doctoral robes in red and gold; hands held up holding sheet of paper; seated slightly to right before a green-draped background; in original patinated gold-painted moulded plaster frame.
Sir Adolph Basser (1887-1964), optician, jeweller and philanthropist was born in Kracow, Austria-Hungary (Poland) and migrated to Australia in 1908. His major philanthropic activities involved donations to hospitals, medical and scientific research and educational institutions including the University of Sydney and UNSW. In 1959 Basser College, the first residential college at UNSW, was founded with his financial assistance. He was knighted in 1962. |
